The Korean War - June 27, 1950-January 31, 1955
The Korean war was a big part of the Cold War. This was between South Korea and North Korea. South Korea is part of NATO and North Korea is part of the Warsaw Pact (Communism.) It was divided after World War II on the 38th Parellel. In 1948 North and South Korea decided to hold elections to see what the government style will be. However, when 1948 rolls around the Soviets refuse to hold elections. So in June of 1950 after several small conflicts the North invade the South. The United Nation and security console go into South Korea to defend them. General MaCarthur was put in charge of the UN forces.
Supplies are sent into South Korea and 90 percent of them are coming from the United Nations. This is a perfect example of containment because we are trying to keep Communism in the North. Then China complains and says if the UN got to close to their boarders they would get involved. Well the UN does get to close so China steps in and pushes our forces back below the 38th parallel.
After this Macarthur says that we should drop and atomic bomb on China and North Korea. Truman thinks this is a horrible idea and tell him no. Macarthur doesn't like that Truman said no, so e goes to the press and makes a public statement about Truman. Truman is not happy about this so he fires Macarthur. In 1953 we declare an armistice. This is where we lay down our weapons and stop fighting. The 38th parellel is then permanently set dividing North and South Korea.
